Welcome to the ICREA Workshop's web

Cultural constructions of the distant past are sometimes andro-centric and gender-biased, which makes the question of the place of women –and also of men- in cultural memory a most relevant area of investigation.

This workshop will explore through a European comparative approach new strategies to change the outdated and often deceptive image of women and gender relations present in people’s cultural memories of the past. Cultural memory in this context is the collective memory that we share as groups or nations, memories of events, processes or persons that have been important in making us who we are. The sum of such memories adds up to 'history', the authorised version of people and events in the past.
